Award for Snailspit Farm at Swaffham

ONE of the top awards in the Norfolk County Farms Business Competition has gone to the 6,500 acre Snailspit Farm, at Swaffham.
Owned by Northamptonshire-based Heygate Farms, it was runner-up in the category for large farms and, as a result of this success, will be entered into the championship class for 2009.
The farm, which won the championship in 2006, is managed by Willliam Gribbon.
Snailspit Farm grows about 1,300 acres of potatoes, as well as sugar beet and 2,000 acres of cereals and also has some sheep. It employs eight people and takes on casual workers at peak times.
Mr Gribbon said that the farm scored highly because it is busy all year round with its wide range of crops and the judges also took into account its environmental input which includes a wild bird survey and involvement in the RSPB's stone curlew project.
