WORK has started on creating a new micro-enterprise centre aimed at helping people with learning disabilities to develop their own businesses.
The centre, based on North Lynn Industrial Estate, will include office and workspace for entrepreneurs who, for the first three years, will not be charged for using the facility.

The scheme is being organised by Lynn-based Forward and Futures, which has been supporting people with learning disabilities since 1980.

In December 2007 they managed to secure a grant of more than £100,000 from the East of England Development Agency's (EEDA) Investors in Communities fund, which is helping to cover the cost of refurbishing the industrial unit.

Forward and Futures project manager Paul Happs said: "This will be a fantastic resource for disabled and disadvantaged people in West Norfolk.

"We are looking for support from the local business community as well as volunteers from the wider community. We would like to talk to anyone who has business experience or feels they can help disabled people engage with the local community."

The site will offer easy access to allow people with multiple disabilities to move about and work freely and independently.

Personal and professional training will also be available to ensure the new businesses become economically active and engage with the community.

West Norfolk Council leader Cllr Nick Daubney said: "I am delighted the EEDA has shown this commitment to West Norfolk and Lynn in Forward and Futures.

"This exciting new resource will mean that we have a variety of employment developments and opportunities for people who are disabled and disadvantaged in our area. We look forward to continuing our support for the project."
