Incinerator: Away support by Cory ‘desperate’
THE developer behind plans to build an incinerator in Lynn have been canvassing for support in a supermarket more than 40 miles away.
Cory Wheelabrator was seen running a promotional stall in the Tesco store at Aylsham on Thursday.
Anti-incinerator cam-paigner John Martin spotted the stall and says that the developer must be “feeling desperate”.
Cory and Norfolk County Council are working on plans to build the incinerator at the Willows Business Park in Saddlebow.
The second round of public consultation for this planning application ended yesterday.
Mr Martin said the people manning the stall were urging shoppers to sign a form addressed to the county council stating support for the scheme.
He said the form stressed a saving of £200 million.
Mr Martin said: “Cory Wheelabrator must be feeling desperate with the final consultation period coming to an end if they consider it necessary to travel as far east as Aylsham to garner support for the planning application.”
Cory says that it was giving information on the scheme and asking for support for the planning application.
The consortium says it is holding a number of these events across Norfolk and is giving an opportunity for every parish to comment.
It also stated that the project could save £200 million over the course of the 25-year-project.
The consortium also says that all of the forms had the recipient’s name and address.
Business development director Paul Green said: “The proposed Willows Power and Recycling Centre is a £500 million development project in Norfolk, which is one of the largest inward investment schemes in the county for many of years.
“The proposals will also create over 1,000 new jobs during the construction phase and 40 permanent jobs over the next 25 years.
“The Cory Wheelabrator Consortium is committed to engaging with the local community and wants to maximize the benefits for Norfolk by employing local people and suppliers.
“To enable people to find out more about the project as well as potential opportunities for business, we’re hosting a series of street stall events across the county to answer any questions and show people how they can get involved as this important development moves forward.”
Four months ago the consortium was asked to leave the Waitrose store in Swaffham after it became clear that their intention was not to hold an impartial survey.
Cory said it had permission and chose to leave after a complaint.
