Incinerator: Delay saves council £16m

A DELAY in the incinerator project has saved Norfolk County Council £16 million.

The county and the consortium were due to sign contracts in March last year. These were signed two weeks ago.

Waste and environment portfolio holder Bill Borrett says the savings are due to currency changes. The equipment to go into the burner is produced in Germany.

He said that the building will be owned by Cory Wheelabrator and that there is no risk to the savings made by the council.

Mr Borrett said: “The price is fixed, if it costs more to build that is Cory Wheelabrator’s responsibility.

“The council does not start to pay anything until it starts to send the rubbish to the incinerator.”

Mr Borrett said the county would pay compensation to Cory if it broke the contract and that it would have to re-submit the scheme if refused planning permission.
