A bid to build in Thornham

A TEAM effort was celebrated on Monday as a group from Thornham managed to fight their way into the final stages of a National Lottery bid for a £450,000-plus grant to build a new village hall and sports pavilion.

John Warham, who heads the team, said: “This is excellent news, not just for the project team but for all the people in Thornham, and the wider local area, who will benefit from our proposals.

“The new hall will provide facilities for all sections of the community. We are particularly delighted also that the Big Lottery have awarded us £20,820 as a development grant to help us prepare the third stage application with the support of two mentors.”

The team of seven have been working on the project to replace the community’s wooden, pre-World War I Drill Hall since 2009.

Colin Venes, grant co-ordinator, said: “I think we want to keep faith with the idea that it is still a competitive business and nothing is guaranteed.

“If all goes according to plan we will hold our 2013 village Christmas celebrations in a new hall, which we trust will serve the village as faithfully as its predecessor has done for 105 years.”

The project is being developed with the assistance of architects, the Dearlove Partnership, and advice from the Norfolk Rural Community Council.

The final decision will be made by the end of September and if Thornham is successful building work will begin within six months of the award.

Mr Warham added: “We know there is still a huge amount of work to do, but we’ll be ready!”
