West Norfolk and King’s Lynn Archaeological Society has said thank-you to two couples for all their years of effort and service.

John and Elizabeth Smallwood and David and Anne Lake received a cut-glass Caithness bowl each and a large cake in thank you from the society.

The Smallwood’s bowl had a picture of Greyfriars Tower on and the Lake’s bowl had a picture of the Southgates on, both iconic areas of the town.

John founded the society in November 1967 and held the first meeting at the Lynn Museum.

They have been involved in many important events in the area, such as the field-walking in advance of the re-alignment of the A10 near Downham, excavations of a kiln at Shouldham and a survey, prior to the Snettisham bypass route being constructed.

Society chairman Dr Clive Bond said: “If it wasn’t for them we would know so much less about the archaeology of the area.

“The society would have never have run so smoothly without the immense support of the Lakes particularly over the past decade.”

Later this year, the society is hoping to hold a community archaeology weekend in Lynn, and to present a conference to commemorate the 45 years since the group was established.
