Downham: Air cadets parading in snow

HEAVY snow may have caused country-wide chaos at the weekend, but it didn’t stop the annual ATC Sunday church parade at Bexwell.

Members of 1018 (Downham Market) Squadron Air Training Corps had a special reason for wanting the service to go ahead as planned because Sunday was also the national ATC’s 71st anniversary.

Regional chaplain the Canon Ron Tuck, travelled from Yarmouth to conduct the service and enrol 10 new recruits. The standard was presented by Flight Sergeant Ben Rayner with escorts Sergeant Hayley Clarke and Corporal Elliot Watson, and a reading was given by Cadet Jake Langham.

The squadron’s Flt Lt Ian Coalfield said: “The service would not have been able to continue if it wasn’t for the determination of all those involved to brave the cold and adverse conditions. Special thanks to Roy the church warden for warming the church and also to Chris the organist for his rousing music.”

The 1018 squadron meets at the Cadet Centre, Bexwell Road, Downham on Wednesdays and Fridays 7-9.15pm.
