North Creake celebrated its first Christmas lights switch-on on the green at the centre of the village, on Friday, thanks to Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, whose Althorp estate donated a tree, and the generosity of residents who raised over £1,000 to fund the event.

The idea was suggested by parish councillor Matthew Sands and a sub-committee of parish councillors and residents quickly made the project a reality. “When the idea got around several residents came forward with donations and together with the sale of food and a raffle and the support of the Jolly Farmers public house there was no cost to the parish,” said chairman, Adam Bunkle.

Althorp Estate owns the green and, with their permission, an underground electric cable was installed from the nearby home of the Jack and Molly Negus by local builders Matthew Sands and Ivor Studd.

Of a population of fewer than 500 it is estimated that a crowd of nearly 200 gathered for the switch-on which was performed by resident Joel Beckett, whose acting roles once included BBC 1’s EastEnders and who is currently filming a Life of Crime, an ITV three-parter scheduled to be shown around Easter next year.

He came home from filming specially to perform the switch-on. “I only had one more scene to film so I’ll have to go back to do it,” he said.

After lights lit up the tree and the nearby village sign Father Christmas made a surprise appearance handing out an unexpected early Christmas presents to the many youngsters in the crowd.

Mr Bunkle said: “We plan to build on the event in future years with more lights. We also aim to plant a Christmas tree on the green which will grow taller year by year. This first year was a real community effort”.
