RINGSTEAD: Rats in roof terror means grandmother sleeps in car

Freebridge tennant Hazel Tipple has resorted to sleeping in her car due to the smell of rats.

A Ringstead grandmother has been sleeping in her car, with only a hot water bottle for company, after fears that rats were infesting her roof.

Hazel Tipple, 65, has been driven out of her semi-detached bungalow in Peddars Way North because of the gradually worsening stench she believes is caused by rats.

She said: “It’s awful, I’ve never had a rat problem before and now they are everywhere.

“I can hear them at night in the roof and they make so much noise, it’s like they’ve got hobnail boots on.

“My grandchildren are too scared to sleep in their room at weekends and my son-in-law won’t even come in the house.”

Mrs Tipple told of how she had contacted Freebridge Housing three times to be told they could not help her and that she would need to contact Environmental Health.

She added: “I’ve spent the last two nights sleeping in my car because the smell is so bad.

“It makes me angry that Freebridge don’t seem to want to help pensioners, when I’ve spent most of my winter heating allowance on rat poison.”

Robert Clarke, director of housing for Freebridge Community Housing, said: “We have been working with Mrs Tipple to resolve this problem.

“We have organised for a pest controller to visit the property this afternoon to carry out an assessment and we have been helping Mrs Tipple to find alternative accommodation whilst this issue is being dealt with.”
