YOUNGSTERS at Wimbotsham Primary School received first-hand accounts of working life in Afghanistan during a visit from members of RAF Marham’s 31 Squadron.

The airmen promised the pupils a visit when they were told of the school’s own efforts to help boost the squadron’s fundraising challenge to support Help for Heroes.

On a special day last term, the children dressed up as their own favourite heroes while parents and the little helpers made a small mountain of cakes which were all sold.

The school has strong links with the local RAF base where Richard Johnson, husband of Class One teacher and volunteer fund raiser Susan Johnson, works as an aircraft mechanic.

Mrs Johnson said: “When the squadron was in Afghanistan, they challenged themselves to run, cycle and row for 31,000 hoping to raise £31,000 for this worthwhile charity, although the final total was more than £40,000.”

During the assembly a cheque for £400 was presented to the RAF representatives, who explained what they were doing in Afghanistan and showed a few video clips of Tornadoes flying over the country.

Four girls read the winning poems they had written as part of the Help for Heroes day and assembly finished with an invitation to visit the base.

The children were keen to get involved and wanted to support the charity that helps wounded service men and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.

The youngsters IT skills were also honed with regular peeks at the on-line charity page which gave them updates on the squadron’s progress.
