SWAFFHAM: Skype me up, Scotty – we’re in cyberspace now!

Breckland councillor Ian Sherwood is taking contact with Swaffham residents to new bounds by offering them the chance to get in touch with him in cyberspace.

On Sunday, between 5pm and 6pm, he is launching his virtual ward surgeries which will enable townspeople to see and speak to him from the comfort of their homes via free Skype to Skype internet video calls.

Mr Sherwood believes he is the first councillor in Norfolk, and probably in the eastern region, to offer this way of contacting him on a regular basis.

He said: “As a local ward councillor the most important thing is that local residents can get in touch with me and it’s my job to ensure that’s as easy as possible.

“I already hold traditional ward surgeries, where residents can come along to see me, but I know how busy some people are so being available via Skype will give people another way to speak to me.

“As the Breckland Council cabinet member with responsibility for communications, I am aware people wish to use social media more and more to access councillors and council services.”

Mr Sherwood is now offering residents seven ways to contact him – by post, email, landline phone, mobile phone, face-to-face at traditional ward surgeries, and via Twitter and Skype.
