Swaffham: Local charity thrown a lifeline
THE Swaffham Mental Health Association has been thrown a £675 lifeline by the town’s Waitrose store.
The association, which runs a day centre in the former railway station, is facing a difficult time because of cutbacks in county council grants and the district council’s redesignation of the property used by the centre.
But shoppers at Waitrose on the EcoTech Business Park voted the association their favourite from three local good causes to benefit from the supermarket’s latest Community Matters scheme payout, which gives £1,000 in donations each month.
Mr Doran, 78, said: “We would like to thank the people of Swaffham and Waitrose for the generous support of our charity.
“These are difficult times for many organisations with the potential withdrawal of Norfolk County Council grants and the change of designation of our centre from a ‘community resource’ to a ‘commercial property’ by Breckland Council.
“If we are to survive we need to increase fundraising activities. If we fail our service, which has been operating in Swaffham for 33 years, may close.
“However, we are determined and, with the help of donations and by looking at other options, we will continue to provide our service to the most vulnerable people of the area for as long as we are able.”
