Swaffham: Tracing town’s medical history
Dr Townend
STAFF at Swaffham Museum are looking to build up a detailed picture of the town’s medical history and are hoping local residents will help them in the task.
They want to hear about the former cottage hospital (now Swaffham Community Hospital) and people’s memories of the town’s doctors for the museum’s Swaffham: Within Living Memory oral history project.
Heritage development officer Sian Hogarth said: “Perhaps you remember Dr Robert ‘Bossie’ Townend, one of the original partners at what became the Campingland Surgery?
“From 1935 he worked with Dr Cadric Hall-Smith at the Hollies in London Street and was one of many GPs local residents may remember.
“Perhaps you recall Dr Baker and Dr Thorp at their surgery in Station Street, Dr Mosse in Cringlegate or Dr Gwen O’Shaughnessy, Swaffham’s first woman doctor?
“We would like to record your memories for our new sound archive and plan to include them in a forthcoming exhibition to celebrate the town’s rich heritage.
“We would also like to display any medical artifacts you may be willing to donate or loan to the museum.”
Miss Hogarth and project officer Alice Mouncer also want to hear from ex-members of St John’s Ambulance, Swaffham Nursing Association and the Red Cross. They can be contacted on 01760 721230.
