THE Duke of Edinburgh is due to meet a 99-year-old ex-serviceman at the Royal British Legion’s 90th anniversary celebrations in Lynn on Sunday.

The town will pay tribute to past and present servicemen and women with a combined military parade from the Common Staithe Car Park through Ferry Street on to the Tuesday Market Place

The Duke of Edinburgh will take the salute at a march past and organisers are hoping to introduce him to George Dakin.

Mr Dakin is the oldest member of the Lynn branch and was the previous resident of Norfolk House, in County Court Road, Lynn before ill health forced a move to Cambridge.

He was a war-time naval lieutenant who served on several ships during World War II, including HMS Highlander and HMS Newcastle.

Gerry Tann, president of the Royal British Legion, said: “This isn’t the first time George will have met the Duke, and we thought it would be lovely to celebrate his 100th birthday this year by introducing them to each other.”

The Legion has planned a full day of activities, starting at 11.15am with a procession from the Royal British Legion Club to Tower Gardens for a remembrance and wreath laying service.

In the afternoon the TS Fearless Marine Cadet Band will entertain members of the public with a band display on the Tuesday Market Place from 1.15pm to 1.45pm, prior to the arrival of the main parade from the Common Staithe Quay Car Park.

The parade will be inspected by the Duke of Edinburgh, who will attach a 90-year pennant to the standard.

There will then be a march past of all those on parade, including members of the Cadet Forces, with the Duke of Edinburgh taking the salute.

Mr Tann said: “What a wonderful start to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a Trooping of the Colour here in King’s Lynn. Please support this historic event and show your appreciation to the men and women who have fought for their King, Queen and country and are still doing so today.”
