A word in Big Eye’s ear . . .

I WRITE in response to the article written by your correspondent, The Big Eye, titled “Who cares?” published in last Tuesday’s edition of the Lynn News.

Here The Big Eye implied that all those who carry out any form of public service are corrupt, self-seeking and dishonourable. I as a local parish councillor found his comment highly offensive, inflammatory but most of all lacking in factual content.

Whilst I fully realise that your correspondent is expected to be topical and controversial to promote debate, I do expect the author to present his prose in a form that is accurate and truthful.

This certainly was not the case in the “Who cares?” article. Here your correspondent deliberately set out to tarnish the good name and the good work carried out by the many parish councillors across the nation.

For The Big Eye’s information, parish councillors do NOT receive any form of remuneration whatsoever. These dedicated and elected volunteers give up many hours of their time working for the betterment of their community.

The work of the parish councillor does not just involve attending the parish meeting for a couple of hours each month. From experience, I can assure The Big Eye that parish councillors expend many voluntary hours each month on council business, be it in the planning role, repairing play park equipment, monitoring council spending, attending various meetings – the list is endless.

For The Big Eye to cast aspersions and state, and I quote, “Am I doing this to dutifully serve the people or am I doing this to serve my own ends?”, I find extremely distasteful and insulting.

Parish councillors dutifully serve the people unselfishly, and not for their own ends as he implies. I have never known of a case of impropriety involving a parish councillor. We work for nothing, does he? I suspect not. I suspect he gets handsomely rewarded for writing his inflammatory and offensive claptrap.
