Be careful what you wish for . . .

I’VE got a warning to those councils who objected to an incinerator at Costessey, near Norwich, when faced with opposition within their community.

Some of these councils have since sent letters of support to Mrs Caroline Spelman for the county’s controversial incinerator proposal to be located in King’s Lynn.

Her subsequent awarding of a promissory note of £91million in public funding credits to Norfolk County Council followed shortly after this support.

There could be an ironic twist to the ongoing drama involving those who support such a proposal actually getting their wish! But not with the outcome they had hoped for...

One of the flaws with NCC’s proposal is the Saddlebow site selection. It is not if, but when, that area will flood. Just look at the last century.

There remains a risk of a tidal or breach flood that would be an environmental catastrophe made worse by the ash and waste if they were added to the flood equation.

To my knowledge a sequential test has not been carried out. This should ensure there are no better locations elsewhere for such a facility.

Should this test fail in King’s Lynn, councillors representing communities elsewhere in Norfolk, having showed their support, could end up getting their wish for an incinerator… but in their back yard.

This scenario remains a possibility and after showing any support it would be extremely hard to then object.

The King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council will be moving forward with a legal challenge of Mrs Spelman’s decision.

She has disregarded the localism agenda and ignored the overwhelming 65,516 No votes (a British poll record)

Her letter to NCC also highlighted there was no broad consensus and this still remains.

This judgment is one of the many hurdles that will hopefully put a stop to this unwanted incinerator both here in King’s Lynn and the rest of Norfolk
