Building a legacy or a monstrous new carbunkle?
I HAVE just been to the event organised by Cory Wheelabrator so that other companies could learn about business opportunities connected with building the incinerator.
It is ironic that this was held at the Ecotech Centre in Swaffham, “the centre for sustainability”, since the only approach to waste which is more unsustainable than burning it is landfill.
Cory Wheelabrator graciously allowed opponents of the incinerator to attend and present their case to individual company representatives.
This was an interesting experience, because it was clear from people I talked to, that whatever personal misgivings these company representatives might have, business needs would dictate the final decision.
Some people were very sensitive about being seen to attend this meeting. One in particular had a van in the car park with his company name and logo, but he complained about being publically identified.
As a result Cory Wheelabrator representatives insisted that I erase all pictures of people there. I made it clear that I would specifically state that nobody filmed should be regarded as either supporting or opposing the project, but that was not enough.
How confident are these people that they are doing the right thing, if they dare not be seen to be doing it?
If we are right, and five, 10 or 20 years down the line it is found that people, including children, have been harmed by this project, will these companies bear the moral or financial cost of their support?
