Complaining has become a national trait
THE Big Eye seems to be accusing everyone from parish councillors to the House of Lords of being dishonest, corrupt and venal.
There are some, as in the case of MPs’ expenses, who were guilty and were not punished enough and executive pay is a national scandal when a lot of people are fighting for their jobs.
Apart from repeating what we can all see on TV, do you have any ground-breaking evidence of this in our area?
If the system of claiming expenses is wrong what are you doing to get it changed, apart from asking those you consider taking advantage to resign.
This government is expecting lower levels of local government and volunteers to do more of its work, a thankless task when all we read about is how corrupt anyone in government is.
What we need is balance, flush out the corrupt but highlight achievements.
Your paper does this to a degree. Its not enough to complain about local government, you should encourage people to get involved. Are you?
Sadly we both know the answer. Rather than go to the local parish council meeting on a wet Tuesday to hear a discussion on litter bins and street lighting, most will stay in and watch junk TV. Unless they have a grudge to address or an agenda of their own of course.
Those who get involved get what they want. You also need to consider what would happen if those councillors did resign. Who would replace them? If no-one, would local government grind to a halt? Complaining has become a national trait. Finding solutions is somebody else’s problem.
I am not in local government but do some charity work and there are never enough volunteers.
