Is this barrier going to make it easier for rail passengers?
YOUR news item last Friday reports that First Capital Connect’s plan to install automatic ticket barriers at Lynn railway station is to go ahead.
This is good news to deter fare-dodgers. But the bad news is that the closure of the side gate is to be pernament - bad news for the disabled, the elderly and those with heavy luggage if they are arriving by car or taxi.
The Lynn Civic Society has drawn this problem to the attention of rail company management and suggested that the barriers should be moved a little further along the platform and then the side gate could be left open.
FCC has rejected this suggestion, citing “safety reasons”. But no-one has yet explained what these are. Proximity to the running lines has been mentioned but how much would a simple fence cost?
FCC has talked of providing staff assistance. But how will a passenger arriving by taxi at the side entrance summon this promised assistance? And even with this assistance the passenger still faces a much longer walk round via the front entrance to the platform. Is FCC really trying to help the paasengers or just trying to make it easier for their staff? COLIN JOHNSTON
