Snow joke at the Baker Lane junction
ROB Archer, pushing his wife in her wheelchair (Two Wheels Good) – and indeed anyone else – is well advised to avoid the junction of Queen Street and Baker Lane.
Precisely at the point where the dropped kerb is situated there is a large depression in the road where water collects into a substantial pool.
Anyone who steps off the pavement there gets very wet feet. This is an especial hazard for those with poor eyesight as the textured paving will have led them to this exact spot.
Moreover, to accommodate the floral displays around the perimeter of the car park, the pavement narrows to such an extent that it is impossible to turn even a buggy around, in order to try another route, without going into the road.
Norfolk County Council was alerted to this hazard months ago and promised to deal with it when officers had been able to assess the extent of the water in order to ascertain the best way to solve the problem. Nothing has been done.
During the recent wintry weather, the pavement was cleared (on the morning of The Queen’s visit) and the snow pushed into the gutter, where it formed a large mound over the dropped kerb and filled the depression.
This helpful act ensured that no-one was able to cross Baker Lane at this point without ploughing through at least a foot of snow.
