Suffering of a rat caught in lonely trap
I AM writing to express my concern about the actions of certain gamekeepers in the area.
One week ago, whilst walking my dog, I heard a screeching sound so went to investigate. In a tunnel was a rat caught by its leg in a spring trap. I pulled the trap out in the open with a stick and my dog dispatched the stricken animal quickly (not pleasant but needed doing).
One week later whilst walking the same route, I was alarmed to find the trap exactly where I left it, still with the body of the rat in its jaws.
A few weeks previously I found a hedgehog in the same trap.
The law (The Protection of Animals Act 1911, Section 10) states “Where spring traps are used they should be inspected at reasonable intervals and at least once every day between sunrise and sunset. Failure to do so is an offence.’’
My points are:
1) The amount of vermin caught by this method must be a drop in the ocean, even if the traps were checked daily.
2) How can a person who is employed to manage the land and the creatures on it, inflict such cruelty and a slow painful death on a living creature, vermin or not, and be proud of the job they are doing?
I have asked for my name and address to be withheld as I have had previous issues over the treatment and culling of vermin around my home, and have been subjected to verbal abuse as a result.
Can anyone advise how this type of offence can be policed and how the culprits can be brought to justice?
