The tip of the iceberg
The current horsemeat scandal is just the tip of the iceberg. Most of the meat in our supermarkets gives us no information about the welfare of the animals.
Of course the higher welfare products carry labels like “free range” or “organic” but other products offer little or no information about how the animals lived and died.
This means pork could come from pigs which have had their tails docked without anaesthetic and lived their lives in barren pens on slippery, slatted floors.
The average chicken could be one of the 27 per cent Defra estimate goes lame before it gets sent to slaughter. That’s an awful lot of birds in pain – about 200 million a year.
It is high time we were given a window into the lives of the animals we eat.
I support Compassion in World Farming’s campaign to get compulsory labelling of all animal products, so we know how and where those animals were reared, how long they were transported for and how they were killed.
