Traffic - There is a way forward
With the busy Christmas period now starting, traffic will be crawling in King’s Lynn. There is a solution to considerably ease the traffic flow in Lynn along London Road heading south at minimum cost. This suggestion has been made several times over the years through this letters page. Simply install signs “Please use both lanes” from St James swimming pool junction to Valingers Road junction. .. It is essential to encourage drivers to use both lanes, Where the lanes merge at Valingers Road install signs “Lanes merge please filter in turn” ... When I suggested these signs to the Highways Department, a few years ago I was told such signs don’t exist, in any case drivers would ignore them. On the contrary these signs do exist and I’m sure the majority of drivers would comply. We’ll never know until it’s tried.
The two lanes heading south out of town was a brilliant idea just let down by lack of signs encouraging drivers to use both lanes and filter in turn at the end. Why is it these signs are used in towns and cities throughout the country but not in Lynn? I consider they should have been installed when the two lanes in London Road were originally completed.
The filter in turn signs, could also be installed at the Southgate arch for vehicles entering the town. As soon as traffic going through the South Gate stops the roundabout is gridlocked, nobody moves.
