Transport - Beeching had nothing on this

Well now Hunstanton has had it’s rail route well and truly blocked by new development, the end is in sight.

Bad planning has done what Beeching and Marples couldn’t do.

Hunstanton will continue to decay devoid of it’s beautiful, famous Victorian pier which starred in a very famous film, and the railway that brought the visitors to come and see it, and to enjoy the area.

Short-sighted planning has done for Hunstanton.

You only have to see how the small seaside town of Swanage has turned around. The local authority there protected the disused rail route into the town.

The town was in major decline in the 1980s, since then enthusiasts with local authority help have slowly rebuilt this route, to bring in massive amounts of new visitors, which in turn has turned a once failing town into a thriving seaside town.

Minehead is another classic example of a town saved by its railway. Looking closer to home you only have to see how Sheringham has benefitted by having a rail route.

This latest building on the rail route (Lynn News, December 4) surely must at least be the final nail in the coffin or the coffin lid for Hunstanton, depriving the town of what with sensible planning could have been a thriving future. Hunstanton deserves better.
