War on the bad driver? It’s high time we had one

I HAVE read with much interest the complaints about the dire standard of driving in Lynn, and I have to say I am in complete agreement.

It’s not just Lynn’s problem of course, it’s a national problem caused by decades of failing to get tough over this behaviour.

Every time I venture out of my house I see incidents of aggressive, dangerous and generally bad driving. How should the authorities deal with this?

Reduce the urban speed limit to 20 is a good idea, putting motorists in their place and making roads safer for cyclists.

Significantly reduce the 60mph limit on country lanes, and reduce the dual carriageway limit to 60 to save on fuel.

I’d invest heavily in public transport, trams, buses, trains and make them affordable for everyday travel, then raise the driving age to 21 and make anyone who wants a licence prove they really need one.

I’d bring in ways for the public to report dangerous driving, significantly increase police monitoring and install black boxes in all vehicles to monitor driving, the data to be checked annual when the vehicle has its MoT.

Drivers would get a limit of three offences before losing their licences for good.

Cars should be built to have a maximum of 60mph and perhaps a top engine sixe of 1.4 litres. 4x4s should be banned except in farm and country use.

“Safety” devices should be removed. Watch how more safely people will drive if they don’t have ABS breaks, airbags and crumple zones to rely on.

I hear your cries of fury, but no-one could deny that drivers have not brought this on themselves. Drivers’ rights to drive their vehicles like idiots are more important than other people’s rights to travel safely and get there alive.

I have young grandchildren and I want them to grow up able to play and go to school and out with their friends safely and independently. I’m sick of seeing selfish, aggressive drivers’ ”rights” overtaking our children’s rights to freedom. Those of you who use a car, beware. War on the motorist? I say bring it on.
