Wheelie bins for dead rabbits?
HOW misinformed and ignorant of the countryside can some people be, especially the person who complained about dead rabbits on the railway line between Snettisham and Ingoldisthorpe.
The endless number of rabbits in that area have not been shot but have been the victims of a severe outbreak of Myxomatosis.
Over a ten-week period my four working dogs have presented me with more than 400 dead or dying animals suffering some stage of this disease, and much as I dislike the damage that rabbits do, I will not see them suffer and have humanely dispatched them.
Am I then to walk home with half a dozen or so rabbits oozing blood and secretions from their sores?
To place the corpses in trees or brambles rather than to leave them on the ground to attract vermin i.e rats or foxes, seems to be a sensible solution. At least they dry out and decay quicker off the ground and are not a temptation for other dogs to eat or roll in.
Maybe the writer could ask the borough council to provide rabbit wheelie bins?
