Wrong to keep wild animals

The Captive Animals’ Protection Society (CAPS) is calling on Lynn News readers to boycott one of just two remaining circuses that continue to use wild animals in their shows, when it performs at Knights Hill Farm Shop in King’s Lynn until March 3.

Circus Mondao uses zebras, llamas, camels, horses, ponies and dogs despite the announcement last year by the Government that it hoped to ban the use of wild animals in travelling circuses on ethical grounds “at the earliest opportunity”.

The Minister at that time, Lord Taylor of Holbeach, branded the practice “outdated” and said: “There is no place in today’s society for wild animals being used for our entertainment in travelling circuses. Wild animals deserve our respect”.

Animal circuses have become increasingly unpopular due to growing awareness and concern at the way in which animals are transported from site to site, kept in temporary accommodation, and forced to perform in the circus ring. As an interim measure whilst a full ban is developed and passed through Parliament, the Government introduced a licensing system but the complex needs of wild animals simply cannot be met in the circus environment.

There are still some businesses that seem to want to fly the face of public, parliamentary and expert opinion and draw out this dying practice to the bitter end.

While the work on the ban continues, it is important that we continue to send the message loud and clear that animals do not belong in the circus. Please vote with your feet and choose an all-human show.

CAPS is urging the public to boycott all animal circuses.
