One for the scrapbook

Reader Ray Bullock, of Meadow Way, West Lynn, sent in the following letter after the recent publication of a photograph of a 1840s football team:

"It was a very nice surprise to see many of my old classmates of the Gaywood Football Team of 1942/43. The picture brought back may memories of those long-gone days, especially those of the two teachers Mr O L Davison, whose nickname was Olly, and Mr Clarke who could hurl a piece of chalk at a pupil not paying attention with deadly accuracy, and was extremely strict. He must have had eyes in the back of his head or a good sixth sense.

Mr Davison was the assistant headmaster and though firm, was very fair and keenly interested in sport, specially football. Len Wilgress, who passed away a few months ago, was also a good cricketer. Strange that John Day, the goalkeeper, was smaller than the rest of the team! Thanks again Ron, that picture is certainly for my scrapbook."
