Protesters demand road closure for Rio

AGAINST a background of flashing lights of the Lynn Mart, protesters joined hands in the freezing cold to form a human barricade across the site of last week’s crash.
The protest was in memory of Rio Bell, three, from Lowestoft, who died after being in collision with a blue Audi A4 in King Street, Lynn, last Wednesday.
He was named by police yesterday afternoon and Rio’s family then released a statement which said: “Three years old, our little man who was full of life, smiles and laughter.
“He loved playing Mario Kart and playing on his motorbike.
“Such a sad loss for all the family, especially Mum and Dad.
“Now a little angel in heaven, forever missed.”
Protesters hope to get the road closed during the two-week period while the Mart is in town each February.
Around 60 people linked arms to block the road for all traffic travelling along King Street on Saturday night.
Co-organiser Paul Macey, 50, from Lynn, held the boy’s hand in his last moments. He said: “To actually go back to the site of the crash was very hard for me, and I’m sure for many others, but everyone who was there was very supportive and it is an incredibly important and worthwhile cause.
“I’d like to give a massive thank you to everyone who came out into the cold to support us.
“We’re now at nearly 4,000 signatures and when we get to 5,000 we will trigger a debate on the petition at full council. Every voice matters at this point.”
“I couldn’t believe it but before we started our protest, there was another near-miss as a young girl stepped out into the road to see round that blind corner and a car came round the bend.
“Her mother was horrified and agreed that corner is very dangerous.
“I’m convinced there will be another serious accident at this rate before the Mart even leaves.
“The protest has just given that extra energy and boost to say this WILL be fought to the very end. We are 100 per cent committed and will fight to the end.”
