THE Queen started her Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Lynn this morning with a visit to the Town Hall.

Around 150 well-wishers braved the snow for a chance to see the Queen and were delighted when she spoke to them and accepted bouquets.

Thomas Williamson, 17, of Reffley, said: “I’d read that every time she smiles it brings the sunshine out and it really did.”

Fee Burridge, of Terrington St Clement said: “The Queen gave us a beaming smile. It has made my entire year.”

Inside the town hall the Queen looked at displays of photographs and artefacts, including the Charter of 1441 granted to the town by Henry VI, the register of her father’s birth at Sandringham and a selection of artwork from Lynn Museum.

Among the paintings on show was one from the 1880s called Too late for the ferry by Robert MacBeth, which shows a lady carrying a child having missed the ferry from Lynn to West Lynn.

Borough Mayor Colin Sampson accompanied the Queen around the Town Hall.

He said: “Starting off a year long worldwide chain of events is really quite something. It has been a huge pleasure and honour.”

Mr Sampson read a loyal address to congratulate the Queen on “sixty years of unparalleled service to the nation”.

He said: “West Norfolk residents are very appreciative of all that Your Majesty has done to support the area and you have earned a very special place in our hearts.”

Mr Sampson gave the Queen a framed copy of the address and she signed a newly released portrait of herself and Prince Philip for the Town Hall.

Outside the Queen was presented with a bouquet from West Winch Primary School pupil Rosie Muspratt, 9.

Rosie said: “It was fantastic. The Queen said: “Is that for me?” I smiled and curtsied and said: “I hope you enjoy your special year.”

As the Queen left the crowd gave three cheers and there were shouts of “congratulations ma’am, we love you”.
