Downham Brownies dig in
IN years to come, Downham Brownies can return to a small wildlife sanctuary in Downham and remember the day they planted more than 1,000 plants and bulbs.
Members of the 3rd Methodist Brownie pack approached Downham Town Council asking if there was anything they could do towards the town's entry in the Anglia in Bloom competition and at one of their recent meetings they headed for a green area opposite St Edmund's Church, in Church Road.
Armed with trowels and forks, they followed instructions and tossed the young plant plugs into the air and then planted them wherever they landed.
"They were all traditional English wild flowers and the brownies were very busy planting them and they enjoyed every minute," said, Brown Owl, Victoria Fonzo. The youngsters have been told there will be a notice placed on the site giving them credit for their efforts, and a few nettles and brambles will be left around the edges in an attempt to attract wildlife.
"Maybe the brownies will return in years to come and see how their plants grow," said Mrs Fonzo, who is also hoping her pack will be able to help in any projects that may come along at The Willows near the town's southern by-pass.
