MORE than 20 teams – twice as many as last year – vied for honours in the ancient art of dragon boat racing at Downham's Water Festival on Sunday, cheered on by hundreds of spectators.
Months of organising paid dividends and local charities and organisations made a little extra cash for themselves by having stalls at the event.

"It was a really successful day and people have already been asking us about next year's event," said Kerry Heffernan, Downham Town Council's events co-ordinator, who was quick to offer a big pat-on-the-back to colleague Kate Martin, who volunteered to jump in the river, without a wet suit and be "rescued" as part of a Newfoundland Dog Rescue demonstration.

Her bravery raised £130 for Break, Downham Town Mayor John Leach's charity of the year.

Winners of the boat race were the Plumbers' Mates, from C and M Servicing, Downham; second were Bryter Later, a team from the Swan pub at Downham; third were Herbert Drag Queens, from R.J. Herbert Engineering.

Junior honours went to the Chuck 'Em Overboard youngsters from Lynn's 7th scout group.
