Join fight to save Downham post offices

WHAT a shock it was to pick up Tuesday's Lynn News and read that Downham could lose its post office branches in Lynn Road and Railway Road.
This is very sad news indeed and must have come as a shock not only to the staff involved, but the customers as well.
And some of our neighbouring villages, including Southery, Nordelph, Wimbotsham and Welney, could also lose their branches, so it does seem that the Downham area will be particularly hard hit if the plans go through.
So it is congratulations to the Lynn News for leading the fight locally to keep these sub-post offices open and I urge you all to read the reports on pages 6 and 7 today and sign the petition form.
I overheard some people this week complaining about the closures, but then almost suggesting that it was a fait accompli and no matter how much we protested the Post Office will not bend. There's no way that "ordinary people" can make them change their mind, was the view.
Well we must not be defeatist. This is the time to make our voice heard and so they will not ride roughshod over us.
I'm about to fill in the coupon. Will you?
n As well as our regular Friday and Saturday town centre markets, watch out for an Italian market next Thursday, April 3, on the town square and town hall car park. That will be followed by a craft and collectable market on Saturday, April 5. As they say, there's something for everyone.
n Teams of four are invited to a quiz night being arranged by Downham Amateur Dramatic Society (DADS) which will be held on Saturday, April 5.
There are prizes for the first three (lucky) teams and it's only £2.50 per head to take part, which includes a light buffet.
The venue is the Howdale Community Centre and there's a 7.30pm start, so if you are interested put a call through to Alison on 01366 500616 or send an email to peter@dadsdrama .co.uk
By the way, DADS' next production is "At the Sign of the Crooked Harlequin" to be staged at the town hall from April 17-19. You can get your tickets from Lewks.
n It's a busy time for our Town Mayor, John Doyle, and his fellow councillors. This evening John hosts his "At Home", always one of the mayoral highlights of the year, and looking ahead to Sunday, April 13, there is the annual civic service at St Edmund's Church.
Just a reminder also that on Wednesday we have a chance to quiz council members at the annual town meeting, which starts at 7pm at the town hall.
If you cannot get along to that meeting, just make a note that the next councillors' surgery will be held on the town hall car park on Saturday, April 19.
n And finally – well done to the traders in High Street who took it upon themselves to organise an Easter egg hunt and in particular Liz Pendleton who came up with the idea. Yes, the weather could have been better, but I understand the competition created interest and got people looking in the shop windows.
