PLANS to build 27 terraced homes in Downham have been turned down amid concerns about access to the town's facilities and the level of affordable housing on site.
The development had been earmarked for land in Bexwell Road, on the site of an existing office, warehouse and distribution premises, but the plans were rejected by West Norfolk Council's development control board members on Monday.

Members spoke of their concern at the poor visibility on the proposed junction with the A1122 and the fact that facilities in Downham such as schools, shops and doctors will only be accessible by crossing the busy A10.

Cllr Roy Groom said: "I think it lacks a case for sustainability. I think it is too remote from Downham.

"We have heard lots of issues regarding access to the site and it does seem to me there will be a high number of vehicle movements."

A report to members stated that Norfolk County Council's highways authority had also objected to the scheme on the grounds it is remote from the town centre and is an unsustainable location for residential development.
