LESSONS learned by Downham firefighters during their first structured recruitment evening are to be passed on to five other West Norfolk stations where new recruits are also needed.
"We did a real drive with posters leaflets and publicity and we were really pleased with the turn-out," said Grant Cotterell, watch manager, reporting that 17 of the 23 people attending the presentation and tour of the £1 million fire station, took away application forms.
"The proof of the pudding will be to see how many of them get completed and returned, but we need to have a good few because several fall by the wayside during the selection process," he said.
"There are a few of us who all joined at the same time, between 24 and 26 years ago and, looking to the future, the station will be needing even more new recruits as well as building up the numbers now.
"Being a fire fighter means you have to be very committed, but it's certainly all very worthwhile and a very positive way of helping the community," he added.
"We were really pleased with the numbers and calibre of people who came forward and we have learned a lot which we will be passing on to our colleagues at other stations where recruits are also needed," said Mr Cotterell.
In the meantime anyone interested in learning more about becoming a retained fire fighter can contact Dave Cain, station manager on 01553 669820.
Extra recruits are particularly needed for Heacham, Hunstanton, West Walton, Outwell and Methwold. Applicants have to be over 18 years and be able to get to their local station within five minutes of receiving a call out.
