An exhibition to mark the 30th anniversary of the floods which devastated West Norfolk has opened at Lynn's Green Quay Wash Discovery Centre.
It features dramatic photographs and newspaper articles documenting the floods which ripped through hundreds of homes and swept away Hunstanton's landmark pier when 70mph winds and high tides combined with unstoppable force on January 11, 1978.
Hu
nstanton fairground was also smashed up, caravans at Snettisham and Heacham were overturned, and Lynn town centre was submerged in up to four feet of water.
It was the biggest threat from the fury of the sea since the killer floods of 1953.
As part of the exhibition which opened on Saturday, the Environment Agency is also staging a display about its flood-warning system in a bid to raise awareness.
It will also include information about which areas are still at risk from flooding today.
Green Quay manager Michael Dennis said: "The 1978 floods were not bigger than the 1953 floods in terms of the loss of life, but people still remember and we felt we should mark the event 30 years on."
The exhibition will run throughout January and February, and is open seven days a week. Admission is free. For more information contact 01553 818500.
