A WEST Norfolk gallery is breaking new ground by staging its first exhibition of photographic art.
The exhibition by the newly-formed Norfolk Photographic Art Group opened at Henderson Art and Framing in St Faiths Drive, Gaywood, on Tuesday (8).

Sue Henderson, who owns the gallery with husband Bill, said: "We've always done art exhibitions, but this is something new to us and very different. We're really looking forward to running it."

Five photographers who make up the new group will be displaying their work in the event, which runs until Saturday, May 3.

Mick Bye, from Shernborne, is the most experienced exhibitor within the group, having displayed his images for a number of years.

Established as a wedding and portrait photographer, his studio and location work has been displayed at a number of galleries throughout the east of England and he is a regular contributor to the annual Norfolk Open Studios event.

Kevin Wilson is also an established wedding and portrait photographer who mainly works from his own studio at home in East Winch. He has seen his work published in magazines in both the UK and USA, and also been included in the Fetish Photo Anthology Volume Four.

Mr Wilson's two themes for the exhibition, Summer Days and The Dark Side, will show off his contrasting styles and among the models featured in his work is one of Australia's top models Tavia Spizer.

Michael Booth, from North Creake, is dedicated to traditional film photography printed on photographic paper. The photos in his collection are all monochrome, printed using traditional methods.

He uses toning processes to give alternative views and remind people monochrome need not mean just black and white. Mr Booth has also presented his work during the Norfolk Open Studios event.

Ashley Cannell, of Bradwell, near Yarmouth, helps the group present photographic skills from across the board with his variety of digital images.

"While two of our members excel in the traditional presentation of monochrome images, we do feel that all aspects of photography should be represented, digital photography, like it or not, is here to stay," said Mr Wilson.

"Ashley shoots all of his images in raw files and his skills in Photoshop should be held in equal appreciation as the more traditional skills of photography."

Making up the group is freelance photographer Colin Matholie, who grew up around the North Norfolk coast. He has been taking pictures for more than 20 years, and is equally at home with film or digital images. He lives in Reepham, near Norwich.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9.30am to 5pm. Admission to the exhibition is free. For more information contact 01553 767662.
