FAKENHAM Mayor Jayne Cubitt is pushing for an alcohol-free zone in the town centre.
This would prohibit anyone from carrying bottles, cans or glasses of drink beyond the perimeters of pub premises.

Such an initiative has previously been backed by the town council but was never put into action.

Mrs Cubitt told her fellow councillors that it was now time to take steps to control drinking on the streets in the evenings.

"I accompanied the police on patrol recently and they confiscated at least a dozen bottles from under-age drinkers," she said.

"This was apparently a fairly quiet night. It needs a few of us to work with them on this and I'm prepared to go ahead. Our new sergeant is looking out the paperwork from Sheringham where they have had a successful no-drink zone for some time."

One of the first tasks for the council will be to determine the extent of the controlled area. It has to be fairly limited otherwise it cannot be properly policed.
