With reference to the letter "We are made to feel like second-class citizens", the borough council has the following response:
The council is unable to comment on specific cases without express permission from the applicant.
The council has a legal duty to investigate all applications made under Part VII of the 1996 Housing Act and the 2002 Homelessness Act.
These
investigations are carried out in accordance with the national Homelessness Code of Guidance and the procedures used by the council apply to all homeless applicants regardless of their background or ethnicity.
The purpose of these investigations is to ensure that people who apply for housing under this legislation are entitled to assistance with their housing.
Some investigations are relatively straightforward and the council is able to obtain all the information it needs to make a decision quickly.
However, some investigations can be more involved and are more time-consuming to resolve.
In all cases the council is committed to providing a high- quality, fair and efficient service to all eligible people who are homeless and to ensuring that its statutory duties to homeless applicants are fulfilled. This commitment will apply to the family who wrote to you, as for all other homeless applicants.
Cllr David
Harwood, cabinet member for
