Ideas to ease Lynn traffic congestion

The worst problem is north-south traffic in Lynn at the moment. The eastern bypass regularly jams.
In an ideal world what I would do is to dual the A11 from Thetford to Mildenhall, and put a second, new dual carriageway from Hunstanton to Thetford, more or less following the A134. West Norfolk would then be joined to the national dual carriageway
network.

Of course, part of the problem is that because of the river, there is no alternative route to the west.

This fact should be used when lobbying for extra resources for the town.

Of course the reality is that our government – whether Labour or Conservative – only ever wants to rip drivers off.

The last thing they want is to have to deliver services in exchange for the taxes on motorists.

Given this depressing reality, I am not averse to building new private toll roads providing the toll is only a couple of quid a trip for a car; and providing slow traffic is kept off the toll roads. (I am not in favour of charging for existing public roads. We already pay quite enough for those.)

Talking of slow traffic, a simple, inexpensive rule used in mountainous American states could well be applied here.

It is that it is unlawful to delay more than "N" vehicles by driving slowly. The number "N" varies from state to state, but the principle could be implemented here: make slow lorries regularly pull into lay-bys and let cars past. That would improve traffic flow for little cost.

I further think that it is barmy to have different speed limits for different vehicle types on single carriageways.

The official excuse for the 40mph limit on HGVs is to stop them running into the back of cars.

Such accidents are rare even though according to the Department of Transport, one third of HGVs exceed 50mph.

This law simply encourages reckless overtaking. That is not a rare accident scenario. Indeed, my own family recently had a narrow escape when a young man overdid trying to pass a line of cars and ended up among the roadside trees on the A10, almost causing a pile-up.

Actually, because many of us have trip meters in our cars and/or satellite navigators, we now know that our average speed is less than 50mph on rural single carriageways.

I think a one-size-fits-all 50mph limit would improve traffic flow, especially if slow vehicles were required to give way.

Other, lower cost, road improvements would be to:

  • Upgrade the roundabout by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. That is quite a bottleneck.



  • Bypass West Winch and Setchey.


The permanent summer weekend jam going from Hardwick to Hunstanton is partly caused by the lack of alternative public transport.

There is, in my view, a serious failure of imagination here. It was very short-sighted to have closed the railway to Hunstanton.

If (ha ha) this were re-opened, the trains could be turned into a really attractive experience.
