Marina will not bring us prosperity

I write to correct the assertion by the editor at the end of a letter in the Lynn News of Friday that the proposed marina will bring both prosperity and jobs. It will do no such thing.
The council's own economic impact assessment, (Ecotec May 2007), maintains that a marina will only bring the promised benefits if, and only if, it is linked to the inland waterway system.

The council has now stated that there are no such plans to link it to the inland waterway system, because no funds are available to make such a link.

Consequently, a marina will be costly mistake and a burden to the people and taxpayers of Lynn.

I could, if required, go through each and every claim made by the council, (and presumably the Lynn News), and by using the council's own economic impact assessment demonstrate how a marina is not economically viable for the town.

Before the Lynn News throws its weight behind the proposed marina, I would urge it, and everyone else, to read the council's economic impact assessment so all may be aware of how dangerous it is to accept council spin without asking pertinent questions.

If the council's own economic impact assessment cannot support a marina development, then neither should the Lynn News.

If the marina is built, despite the evidence it will be neither economically viable nor sustainable, nor be good for the town, both the elected councillors and the Lynn News will have to answer some difficult questions for misleading the public.

Jeremy Dearling, Lynn

The editor says: Our comments were made to contrast with views made by another letter writer, who seemed to think that the creation of a marina was simply a "wheeze."

Of course, we would expect that it would not be built if every report seemed to think it was doomed to failure.

However, we have to start somewhere. And there are many who would think that building a marina, without an inland waterways link initially, is still better than having no marina at all.

After all, only this week planners agreed that Bridlington should have a marina – presumably without inland waterways links.

In the meantime, it must surely be of greater concern that boundary changes might mean the bulk of funding in this area heads towards Norwich and Lowestoft.
