Put Huns'ton back into Norfolk
Copy of a letter sent to the Boundary Committee:
Proposed Norfolk Unitary Authority: I have lived in Hunstanton for more than 40 years.
Originally there was an active and highly thought of Hunstanton Urban District Council which fully represented the views of the townspeople.
The subsequent devolution to the Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council has never been a great success and their mismanagement of the affairs in our town seems to occur with great regularity.
Since it has been in control they have succeeded in alienating many in the town because of its total disregard of local feelings.
Last year there was a petition of more than 150 names for refusal of a major planning application which represented a change in character of a whole area of the town.
The current Hunstanton Town Council, the civic society and the residents' association were also totally in opposition to this development and we made our views known to the borough council.
At a meeting of the development control board, which I attended to present our case, our views were not even fully discussed and this committee then agreed to the proposed plans in spite of the overwhelming local opposition.
The borough council has allowed the destruction of one of the finest views in the town by allowing the development of a monstrous building where the former head of the pier stood.
It has recently introduced 24-hour parking fees in car parks which were previously free and allowed local residents and work people to park.
This has now resulted in the car parks being empty and surrounding roads being used for "double-sided" parking with the inherent dangers to road users, especially pedestrians. We have seen some recent activity in "tarting" up flower beds in preparation for an "in-bloom" competition.
One particular exhibit of plants in a strategically-placed boat is placed near to the pitch and putt course, where the borough council has also recently decided to allow the corner areas of this facility to grow wild... the appearance of cans, bottles and waste paper has merely added to the weeds in the area.
We might get an "award" for our blooms but that does not add anything, particularly to local amenities.
And finally, the borough council has recently erected a town events sign board, obviously designed for motorists to read, and placed this on the main road into the town only about 15 yards from one of the busiest roundabouts in the town.
Presumably, the perpetrator of this has shares in a local "car bumper" repair business!
Nothing could be more stupid that to erect a noticeboard with many events publicised, in relatively small writing, to be on a public highway in any eventuality.
We have a plethora of silly and useless road signs... some 165 between Lynn and Hunstanton. If we were to read them all then the accident rate would surely rise.
