On July 23 I had the pleasure and honour of being invited to attend the presentation of veterans badges at the town Hall by the Borough Mayor David Johnson.
The event was presented in a very dignified manner and was well received by those not only receiving their veterans badges but also by the people present.

However, when the report was published in the Lynn News on July 29 I was somewhat taken aba
ck by the comment that this was the first time that this presentation has taken place in Lynn.

Last year on June 27 (Veterans’ Day) the Lynn branch of the Royal British Legion organized the presentation of more than 100 veterans’ badges to veterans.

The event was held at the Town Hall and veterans sat down to a lunch before being presented with their badges. On this occasion serving officers of HM Armed Forces and the Deputy Mayor Michael Langwade made the presentations.

Not only did the veterans receive their badges, they were also presented with a certificate to commemorate their service in the Armed Forces, signed by the Borough Mayor Kathy Mellish and the President of the Lynn branch of the Royal British Legion Ken Jones.

Mr Langwade was also a recipient of a veterans’ badge and certificate.

Since that event the Lynn branch has been able to arrange for more than 40 other veterans to receive badges.

Many people are unaware that anyone who served in the Merchant Navy to facilitate military operations by HM Forces is entitled to the UK Merchant Seafarers Veterans’ Badge.

The Bevin Boys and the Women’s Land Army likewise are also entitled to a Veterans badge.

For more information contact Gerry Tann on 01553 674953.

PS: If you see someone wearing a veterans’ badge, say thank you for serving.

Gerry Tann, RBL branch

chairman
