We can learn from Wisbech and Ely on South Quay future

ROBERT Holmes (Lynn News, August 8), was right to criticise the proposed development for the old granary site on Lynn's South Quay.
I would go further, and say that what we need is a total rethink of the area.
What Lynn does not need is another example of a developers' "house style", designed by the mile and cut off by the yard, which have so anodised the majority of England's small market towns.
The Vancouver Centre, a classic example of developer's "house style", is an architectural disaster and arguably Lynn's greatest aesthetic embarrassment.
Rather than commission proposals from endless developers, what the council should be doing is to appoint an architect capable of designing in the vernacular, while at the same time identify a source of independent funding from which the lender can recoup their investment from the subsequent sales.
And as for style, I suggest that whoever is selected is asked to study the character of the Georgian buildings on North Brink, Wisbech, and the recent riverside development at Ely.
To be quite blunt, if Ely can manage to build well, then so should Lynn.
CREATIVE
It's about time we started to address what the people want, rather than to fall in line with so many other local authorities whom, devoid of creative thinking for themselves, merely turn to one of the stock developers at whose feet the disappointment of so much contemporary architetcure can be laid.
