Activities - Get involved in eco-arts events

Rubbish including cans, oil drums and plastic pipes will be put to good use in a special event merging music with environmental issues.

Budding musicians in Swaffham are being invited to get involved in a special Eco-Arts Day designed to give local talent a chance to shine while raising awareness about eco-friendly living.

Highlights are set to include a junk music workshop using recycled objects and a special exhibition exploring ways to help the environment. The green event will climax with an eco-rock gig featuring local bands at the town's Assembly Rooms.

Community music specialists Norfolk Music Works (NMW) have been working with young people in Swaffham since October last year on one of seven regional projects which make up Blueprint, a volunteering project for 16 to 25-year-olds in the East of England.

Youngsters in Breckland have been meeting weekly and working with NMW to design the community event, set to be held in mid-February.

Local bands can try for a spot in the festival line-up between 1pm and 5pm at Swaffham's Campingland Community Centre on Saturday, January 12.

Ema Holman, general manager at NMW, said: "We are looking for more 16 to 25-year-olds who have some spare time to help run an eco-arts day for Swaffham in February. You don't have to be interested in music to take part – we are looking for anyone who wants to help out.

"We need photographers, box-office staff, stewards, backstage crew, people to help with publicity and press, exhibition organisers, a group to help select the final band line-up and those interested in helping with finance and general event organisation.

"Volunteers will meet on a regular basis from January and will have the full support and resources of the Blueprint professional team. This project will give young people the freedom to experiment with their own artistic ideas and to develop new skills."

Any band or volunteer wishing to get involved can go along to the town's Campingland Community Centre from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday, January 12.
