SET in Lynn town centre and the coastline between Hunstanton and Wells, the adventures of Det Insp Peter Shaw continue in Death’s Door, the fourth novel in the thriller series by Jim Kelly.

Mr Kelly says he loves the spooky isolation of West Norfolk.

The 54-year-old author said: “What was really missing from my previous novels set in The Fens, was that real feel of a town.

“Lynn has got a character and edge, it’s got a real gothic feel, a darkness which translates to the page fantastically.”

The crime mystery novel begins 25 years ago when a murder happens on a tiny island set off the coast at Wells, the case is never solved and the murderer never found.

Flash-forward to the present day and the case is reopened with new technologies available being used to solve the mystery and find the killer.

Mr Kelly added: “I spend a lot of time writing at Lynn library and researching or looking for inspiration around the town; Lynn is such a great place to find ideas to begin with and develop them.

“In this novel, the characters spend some time at a pub that was actually based on the Live and Let Live pub in town.”

Mr Kelly, who lives in Ely with his wife, Midge Gillis, also a writer, discovered Lynn by accident.

He said: “Like Shaw’s character, I love the beach and we used to drive up endlessly to Brancaster and Hunstanton.

“The first time I came to Lynn because I had read something about it. I was a bit overwhelmed at first, it’s got such a great atmosphere but at the same time a real sense of isolation.”

David Learner, assistant manager at Waterstone’s, in Norfolk Street, Lynn, which is stocking the book, said: “It’s great that Jim’s still delighted to litter King’s Lynn with corpses and get away with it.”

n Death’s Door by Jim Kelly is published by Severn House and costs £19.99.

Topping and Company Booksellers of Ely host its launch next Thursday at 7pm, where Mr Kelly will speak, sign copies and answer questions. Tickets cost £6/7, with a voucher for the book call 01353 645005.

Mr Kelly will also be giving a talk and signing copies at Waterstone’s in Lynn on Thursday, February 23 at 6pm. Tickets cost £3 but anyone purchasing a ticket will get £2 off the book.
