Exhibition will mark Diamond Jubilee
TO celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London is hosting an exhibition of portraits of Her Majesty by the photographer Cecil Beaton (1904-1980).
Covering three decades, it depicts the Queen in various situation, including her first sitting with Beatonand on Coronation Day.
Featuring over 100 portraits, drawn from the the museum’s extensive 18,000 Beaton archive, the exhibition highlights Beaton’s royal photography, Queen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration and chronicles Her Majesty’s majestic 60-year reign.
It depicts Queen Elizabeth in roles as princess, monarch and mother and includes a number of photographs (contact prints), and excerpts from Beaton’s diaries as well as hand-written letters from the University of Cambridge.
Arranged in five sections, the exhibition depicts Beaton’s style inspired by photographers such as E.O. Hoppé, Edward Steichen and Baron de Meyer, the most successful magazine photographers of the 1910s and 1920s.
A section of the exhibition also shows portraits of Beaton taken by his contemporaries, such as Curtis Moffat, Irving Penn and David Bailey.
The exhibition is due to have started on Wednesday (February 8) and will last until Sunday, April 22.
