Two Gaywood guide units are celebrating the success of 13 members who have gained the highest accolade for Guides – the Baden-Powell Challenge Award.

The successful teenagers were: Alice Brundle, Emily Carter, Lizzie Durham, Olivia Grummett, Katie Taylor, Hannah Tester and Heidi White of the St Faith’s Guides group and Ashleigh Bix, Jessica Blatch, Evalyn Drake, Kayleigh Ord, Jody Sargeant and Becky Williamson of the Reffley Guides.

They received their awards from West Norfolk Mayor Geoffrey Wareham in a ceremony held at Lynn Town Hall.

Guides from St Faith’s took part in activities including Ready, Steady, Cook on a Trangia (portable stove), Chinese and Ugandan themed evenings, outdoor pursuits, researching fair trade issues and fundraising.

Reffley guides were involved in first aid training, learning about other cultures, planning evenings for Brownies, investigating communication methods and taking part in charity events.

County Commissioner Pat Pinnington said: “The activities are all relevant to girls of today and topics that interest them.”

They were also among 13,000 Guides from across Britain who attended the “Big Gig” in Birmingham last year and saw performers including The Saturdays, Olly Murs and Conor Maynard.

During their time as Guides, one of their most memorable experiences was attending an international Centenary Camp in Leeds in 2010 where activities offered included canoeing, sailing and horse-riding. They also travelled to Disneyland Paris in 2010 and Adelboden, Switzerland, in 2011.

St Faith’s Guide Leader Gail Robinson said: “I’m very proud of the girls. This marks the end of a lot of effort and dedication.”

Reffley Guide Leader Melanie Carter said: “The girls will look back on all the skills they have learnt and the fun they had in the process.”
