Give us our daily bread...
Denver Mill celebrates lammas day - Denver Mill baker Heather Eagle shows the lamas loaf with Martin Ager (left) the head baker and Mark Abel (right) the Denver Mill director.
TRIBUTE to an ancient harvest festival was celebrated at Denver Windmill, with cookery theatre and a range of other activities.
For the past two years Lammas day has involved a field-to-plate challenge of harvesting, milling and baking, all on the same day, but this year the focus was on grains and their uses.
“We had a cookery theatre going throughout the day and most people joined in shaping dough for the traditional harvest loaf,” said miller Sally Abel, daughter of the joint directors Lindsay and Mark Abel.
“I came here as business development manager, but somehow got side-tracked!” said Sally, whose boyfriend Duncan McGregor is catering manager at the mill and gave a pasta-making demonstration.
Mark Abel explained the advantages of using whole grains, and Samantha Styles, confectionery baker, demonstrated how semolina can be so much more than a bad school memory, and has a useful role in baking.
Head baker Martin Ager gave a talk and demonstration on rye bread and sour dough, both making a popular come-back, and Lindsay Abel showed how to make the best granny’s version of sticky apple pudding.
“I think everyone enjoyed the tasting too,” added Sally, surprised at how many people stayed for the entire afternoon.
The mill is open every day 10am-5pm and the next main activity day is on Sunday, August 14, with an American Civil War re-enactment, including field hospital with amputations.
