A borough councillor has pledged to look at a claim that a Hunstanton bar may be allowed to site a smoking shelter on part of the town’s Green.

The claim was made at a town council meeting, where John Maiden said he had first raised concerns on the issue about land next to the O’Quigley’s bar in Le Strange Terrace, pictured above, in the autumn of 2011.

He said he had received information from an individual he described as a “whistle-blower” which suggested an application to use the area as a smoking shelter would be submitted to West Norfolk Council and officers were minded to approve it.

He said the information appeared “very worrying”, in the light of claims that building on the area is not permitted by covenants.

He called for the issue to be resolved urgently, adding: “These things have a habit of being repeated elsewhere in the town.”

Alistair Beales, borough council cabinet member for regeneration, said he had not been aware of the issue, but added: “I will take it forward and have a look at it.”
